Welcome to the BRUBAKER BOX Journey!
Get ready to embark on an extraordinary adventure with DRIVEN.co as we unveil the original Brubaker Box — the iconic car that graced the cover of Car and Driver in March 1972 and starred in several films!
After years of searching, we discovered this automotive gem in a dilapidated state, hidden away in a Florida swamp. This masterpiece deserves better, and we’re dedicated to restoring it to its former glory so that enthusiasts, art aficionados, and automotive lovers can revel in its uniqueness. But beware! If you’re shy, this car might not be for you. The Brubaker Box is a true showstopper that turns heads and draws crowds wherever it goes! Considered by many as the first modern minivan, its bold, quirky design breaks all traditional molds and still looks ahead of its time. Crafted as a fiberglass body shell kit that transforms a classic Volkswagen Beetle into one of the coolest rides on the road, the Brubaker Box is your ticket to becoming the center of conversation. It’s rare, almost extinct, and it's time to bring her back to life —whether that means going electric, hydrogen, 4x4, or autonomous! Born in Southern California and inspired at the renowned Art Center College of Design, designer Curtis Brubaker, along with his talented team members Todd Gerstenberger and Harry Wykes, created a vehicle that was sporty, utilitarian, and safety-minded. The Brubaker Box debuted in 1972 to rave reviews, sending shockwaves through the automotive world with its avant-garde aesthetic. Only three original Brubaker Boxes were ever built, and despite plans for a partnership with Volkswagen, production came to an abrupt halt. Following its brief but dazzling moment in the spotlight, including appearances in the classic films Soylent Green and the beloved TV series ARK II, the Brubaker Box faded into obscurity. But the story doesn’t end there! After four decades of searching, DRIVEN.co struck gold when we uncovered an unbuilt kit that had been forgotten in storage, and soon after, we rescued the original prototype from its swampy tomb. We’ve shared our journey with fans through popular shows like Autobiography and Motor Trend’s Car Kings, and our YouTube channel has captured the hearts of viewers of all ages. The fascination with the Brubaker Box continues to grow, bridging the gap between tech enthusiasts, off-roaders, custom builders, and purists. Join us in celebrating this incredible piece of automotive history. |
