The Brubaker Box, designed in the early 1970s by Curtis Brubaker, with Todd Gerstenberger and Harry Wykes, sought to modernize the iconic Volkswagen Minibus using the chassis of a Volkswagen Beetle. Only three original Boxes were completed, one of which appeared as the Roamer in the TV show Ark II.
The construction of the Brubaker Box involved a fiberglass body made from 17 panels that bolted directly to an unmodified Beetle chassis. It featured a relocated foot pedal assembly, a central fuel tank for safety, and used parts from various vehicles, including an AMC Hornet windshield and Datsun truck taillights. A single sliding door provided access, while a spacious rear lounge with an ottoman added to its appeal. The original prototype Brubaker Box #1 shown here in its original copper colour is being restored. The Roamer, shown here in silver, was made for the television series Ark II has disappeared and not surfaced in many years.
Mike Hansen's Automecca, produced about 25 more units, known as Sports Vans. These maintained the original design and construction techniques. Ruby Fire, showcasing its striking red exterior, custom interior, and unique sliding door design, is a favorite at auto shows, You Tube and in magazines while exciting a whole new generation of Brubaker enthusiasts.
